I have painted this image by Paula Bronstein to help raise funds for UNICEF’s mission in promoting and protecting the rights and wellbeing of children and women in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has always been one of the hardest places in the world to be a woman or child but the current triple crisis - conflict, drought and COVID-19 - is making life incredibly difficult for families.

Since 1949, UNICEF have been bringing basic services, including education, health, nutrition, protection, water, sanitation, and hygiene to those who are most in need, addressing inequities in each of these areas. UNICEF also provides humanitarian assistance during emergencies.

With the Australian and American Governments recent evacuation, there are many people fearing for their lives under Taliban rule and are seeking safe passage. As the situation changes daily, families face an uncertain future with hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes.

UNICEF have stayed to help and remain committed to the women and children of Afghanistan. They are working to reach children and families across the country with life-saving assistance who all need protection and peace now more than ever.

This image was captured in 2003 of Afghan woman and children waiting in line to receive health care and has resurfaced in recent articles and stories emanating from Afghanistan. I wanted to capture the raw emotion in this image and reinvent the strong message that is portrays for the situation that women and children find themselves in.

As I have been seeing and hearing the stories coming out of Afghanistan, my heart has been breaking for the women and children isolated in a country where their rights and wellbeing are becoming non-existent after many years of hope and opportunity. I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing, and so I have decided to do what I can to help.

I will be donating all proceeds from the sale of this original artwork to UNICEF’s Help Children in Afghanistan Appeal.
